SCENE REPORT: Mel Gibson's Got Nothing On These Girls.

IRDD's Sioux City Correspondent and Sioux City Roller Dame Skinnerella brings a scene report of Saturday night's bout against No Coast (Lincoln NE). Skinnerella is the author of this piece.

Last night in Lincoln , NE , two mighty warrior tribes locked in battle, only, unlike thunderdome, there were refs everywhere, whistling, pointing and just generally taking all of the fun out of anarchy. The Dames hit the taped track hard…and quickly fell down; the floor was as slippery as a greased-up catfish, but that made for some crazy fast skating and some mighty entertaining hits and dog piles.

In the first jam, the Roller Dames jumped out to a quick lead with Funsize scoring 15 unanswered points. Well, we were just so tickled with that early lead that we decided to celebrate by throwing some elbows, blocking out of bounds and tripping a few people. There was quickly a waiting list to get into the Dames’ penalty box, which allowed the Warriors to make up some ground, and then some. Between Dropkick Muffy, Crazy Cooter and Anna WrecksYa, the Road Warriors scored more than the cute janitor at the all-girl Catholic High School . By the halftime buzzer, the Warriors had 15 points on the Dames and we retired to the locker rooms with the score 63-48 (for those of you who don’t have a calculator handy, that’s a 30 point swing in less than 20 minutes).

The Dames regrouped. We all took off our naughty pants. Someone looked up “Strategy” with their Wikipedia app, and we were ready to go. We went back at it hard, keeping the pack fast and making the jammers work for every point. Of course, when the jammer is in the box, it’s pretty easy to keep them from scoring. Apparently we looked like we were having sooooo much fun in our penalty box, that the Road Warriors decided they’d all like to take a spin in their own box, and the refs were more than happy to oblige.

It was almost like there were three teams out there: Dames, Warriors and Refs. There were a total of seven officials, meaning that each skater had, an average of 1.4 eyeballs on them at any given time. Let me tell you, those 1.4 eyeballs didn’t miss a thing. The crowd had a really good hate going on and it was all pointed at the officials. All those screaming, belligerent derby fans were enough to make ref Kilgore Trout long for Lingo-Three, the planet of dying car-bots. The penalty officials could hardly keep up with the traffic in and out of the boxes; skaters were getting waved off from the full boxes, called back only to meet another player reporting to serve out their penalty. It was quite the, well, in order to keep the language here at a PG-13 rating, I’ll call it a frottage-barrage (look it up).

Almost everyone made at least one trip to the penalty box except, our own PBR. Mad props. I don’t mean to brag, but I committed my very first major penalty: tripping—please, please, hold your applause until all of the winners have been announced. Dames’ triple threat, Dubbs chucked a Road Warrior into the suicide seats in a Royal Rumble-style move, which, while fine in the pro wrestling world, is frowned upon in roller derby. Then, in a classic tiny vs. skinny clash, Funsize got all tangled up with Anna WrecksYa until they resembled a pretty two-headed spider on roller skates.

Road Warrior blocker, Hugs, whose name is very misleading, by the way, dominated the front of the pack, taking out Dames left and right, and, along with Celia Doom, Boom Boom Brooklyn and the rest of the Warrior’s blocking assassins, made the Dames’ jammers battle for every single point. But battle they did. The Dames played like we were still 15 points behind, and the next time we looked up, we were a jaw-dropping 72 points ahead. The score was 82-154 at the buzzer, giving the Roller Dames a W for the first bout of our season. I want to give a big THANK YOU to all of the No Coast Derby Girls for being great hosts, showing us an awesome time and playing a helluva good bout.

IRDD Covergirl for August/September: Sum Mo Payne of the Sioux City Roller Dames

Real Name: Melissa Dittberner
Derby Name: Sum Mo Payne
Team: Sioux City Roller Dames
Position: Triple Threat (Jammer/Blocker/Pivot)
Age: 28
Current Town: Gayville, South Dakota
Hometown: Madison, Nebraska
College: University of South Dakota- 3rd year (Substance Abuse Prevention Major)
Family: 2 Kids. Baylee,9 and Boone, 7. (Both are skaters)

Were you athletic growing up? I was a bit, I am really kinda short so my basketball career was limited, but I ran fast, so I thought track was pretty rad.

How did you get involved in Roller Derby? The founder of the Dames just happens to be my heterosexual lifemate. I believe she called me drunkenly and told me she was going to build a team, and I was just starting college and thought what the hell I am already changing my whole life might as well give it a shot and help her out...PS, thank you Liberty PBR Claeys for one of thee most positive changes I have made to date.

How has derby impacted your life? In so many ways, first and for most, I am able to give back to the community, this is the main reason I am involved. Roller derby has shown me who I really am, and by the way I am one tough cookie. I had no idea I could do so many things at one time. Planning special events. Coordinating bouts. Advertising. Scheduling practices. Sometimes being a derby counselor. coaching practice, making a tournament happen to name a few. I have a ton of responsibility in my league and I would never want to let anyone down so that thinking keeps me quiet motivated and I have learned to manage that stress in hip checks and shoulder blocks.

I broke my arm playing derby in 2009, this really showed my how much I love the sport, I was begging to bout in my cast. I don't know if I can say that roller derby saved my soul (as the song states) but it sure makes it happy.

What is your favorite aspect of Derby? I have met some of my favorite people through derby that I would have met no other way and cannot imagine my life now without them.

Least favorite The time I spend behind this damn computer organizing events

What are your goals for your team this season? My goals are huge and I know we can achieve them. The Dames plan on winning the Rolling Along the River tournament in October. The rest is a secret. We have an amazing group of girls this season. We have newbies with heart and soul and we have vets looking better then even and a list of new drills a mile long. Watch out for the Sioux City Roller Dames this season.

Sum Mo Payne of the Sioux City Roller Dames, is building a very formidable Derby resume. Sum Mo Payne, who is a triple threat on the oval, was named Sioux City's team MVP for 2010.

Yet it is the challenge coming up later this month that may be the biggest addition to her derby credentials. Later this month Sum Mo Payne will join with Sioux City teammates PBR and Dubs to skate across the state of South Dakota to raise awareness and money in the fight against MS. The Skate The State Facebook Page is located here.

I asked her about how the event came to be.

How did you ladies decide to do "Skate the State"?
Skating across a state was something a friend and I had talked about long ago. I waited for him to get it started as I was just to busy helping the Dames get rolling. After awhile I thought it was time to put some skates in motion for a good cause. In February,I started talking to the team about it and asking if people were interested. PBR was immediately in and Dubs was right behind her. After that the rest is all history. This event is going to be one for the books. I cannot tell you how humbling it has been to hear all the MS stories there are so many people that are effected by MS in one way or another. I am honored to skate for such a good cause.

Sum Mo Payne is the picture of strong athletics and strong womanhood that personifies the derby ideal. With that in mind, it is my honor to introduce Melissa "Sum Mo Payne" Dittberner as IRDD's Covergirl of the Month for August/September 2010.

Mahaska Mayhem Defeat CRRG Bombshell Cartel

For Mahaska Mayhem Jammer/Blocker Anita Spankins, the clinching moment of her teams first ever victory inside the oval was a sweet moment to savor.

"It was just pure excitement," she said. "We were finally going to win. We were finally going to get that money off our back. It was just pure awesomeness."

In this, their fifth bout in the young history of the team, the Mahaska Mayhwm defeated the Cedar Rapids Rollergirls Bombshell Cartel 113-61 before a home crowd Saturday night at the Spinnin' Wheels Skate Center in Oskaloosa.

While Anita Spankins said the Mahaska Mayhem was plagued by penalties, mainly following through on elbows, and cutting the track among other things, she said that this game marked the pivotal moment where the team took the focus and confidence of a practice and applied it to the game.

"We took the game that we play where we are confident and sure of ourselves and took it to the track," Anita Spankins said. "All of us have stopped living in the frenzy of the moment and started focusing on the mechanics of the game."

Both Anita Spankins and Malicious B, pivot/blocker for the CRRG: Helldorados, who as assisting the Bombshell Cartel tonight, cited the jam just before the close of the first time, a 20-plus affair by Mahaska Mayhem jammer B.A.B. as the turning point of the match. During that sequence, which was a power jam, Anita Spankins said that with two Mahaska blockers on the bench, blocker Kandis Hit took out three Bombshell Cartel blockers, who were attempting for form a wall.

Malicious B said that the Bombshell Cartel, of which she skated on, fielded a team in which roughly half were in their first bout. Malicious B. said that throughout the game the newer girls had an excellent sense of teamwork, but ran into trouble because they lacked communication on the oval.

While the Bombshell Cartel did not carry the bout, Malicious B. noted that a couple of the new girls had breakout nights. "In the second half Lil' Bit Lotta Hitz. started doing crazy footwork out of nowhere," Malicious B. said. "She was making it through the pack with little to no assistance from us. She really broke out of her shell."

On the blocking side of the equation, Malicious B. was particularly impressed with the efforts of Knuxe D.Luxe, whom she said had a great sense of what was going on in the pack but also delivered good hits.

Malicious B. said that the Bombshell Cartel needs to work on team cohesiveness and communicating with each other to make sure that everyone is on the same page. On the Mahaska side, Anita Spankins indicated that Mahaska's penalty problems would have to be dealt with.

We have to take the good out of it and the bad," Anita Spankins said. "We also have to go back to drawing board to stay out of the penalty box because that is what kills us every time."

CRRG's Rockabelle On Her First Bench Coaching Experience.

Cedar Rapids Rollergirl jammer/blocker Rockabelle made her bench coaching debut Saturday night for the CRRG Bombshell Cartel against the Mahaska Mayhem. She is the author of this piece, which gives a bit of insight into the thoughts of a Derby girl confronting coaching for the first time. Rockabelle is the author of this piece.

Have you ever watched the MTV series called ‘If You Really Knew Me?’ It profiles high school students who are brought in to a ‘Challenge Day’ where they are pushed outside of their comfort zones to be taught many, many lessons about themselves. The leaders of the day compare their comfort zones to about a 2’ x 2’ square box.

Well, if you really knew me…..you’d know that my comfort zone is on a 148.5’ x 236.5’ oval track, in the middle of a pack, with lots of hard-hitting action. I was pulled out of this comfort zone (okay, maybe it was more of a gentle coercing) by the beautiful ladies of the Bombshell Cartel last night as they took on the Mahaska Mayhem on their home turf.

I started playing roller derby in the fall of 2008. I’ve been bench coached more times than I can remember. I knew what I liked in a bench coach and how I prepared for a game so I’d be a master at this right away without nerves or anything. Right?!

Getting ready to head out for Oskaloosa was the first time I felt the tables turn. My husband is a ref and I got to stand there and watch him put his (larger than life) gear back into the back of my truck while my gear bag stayed tucked away in the comforts of my home. He looked at me and said, ‘How weird does this feel?!’ It felt pretty different, but I shook it off as I also hadn’t been experiencing any of the bout day jitters that I normally get and hadn’t yet hunkered down in my pre-bout routine to start mentally preparing myself like I normally do.

After arriving at Oskaloosa's local skating rink - Spinnin' Wheels - I realized I hadn’t talked to my co-bench coach, AJ Renegade, about our strategy and how we’d run the bench. AJ and I met and talked about our roles – both being new to the bench coaching world, neither of us was sure how the night would turn out. We decided that I would watch the action, call plays and coach the players on what they did right or what to work harder on next time. All the while, AJ would organize the squads.

We had this down! I had my role, AJ had her role, the Bombshell ladies were warming up on the track and I suddenly experienced the awkward feeling of not knowing what to do next. Do I stand here and watch them warm up? I had already gotten their numbers on their arms. AJ stocked the bench with more water. Do we discuss plays? Strategies? It was quite odd not having eight wheels underneath me and being on the track chatting it up with the opposing team as we prepared to go head-to-head in derby battle!

I thought, no! Just chill out, be there for the girls if they need anything and just revel in the fact that your nerves aren’t………crap. There they are. The nerves set in. I couldn’t believe it! I mean, I wasn’t about to take on a newer team – a team that has been steadily getting better and better, harder hitting and was out to capture their first win! No. I wasn’t.

However, I was there to be a fearless leader to the Bombshell girls that wanted to steal that win from them. I was there to help the two girls who were bouting for the first time. I was there to help call the plays and keep the team working as a cohesive unit. I was there to spread the knowledge I’ve received as a Helldorado and pass that knowledge along to our Bombshell ladies. I had a lot of responsibility on my shoulders. No less responsibility than the ladies on the track had. It just came in a completely different form.

The introductions were done. The Star Spangled Banner was complete. Now was time for the action to start. If you really knew me…..you’d know that I had an absolute blast bench coaching this amazing team. You’d know that I was impressed with how I kept my cool, coached the newer girls, and praised everyone for the great things I saw on the track. You’d know that I was pushed way outside of my comfort zone and learned many lessons about myself. And you’d know that although these ladies didn’t bring a win home for Cedar Rapids, I am incredibly proud of how these newer girls played and cannot WAIT to get an opportunity to bench coach again in the future.

Scene Report: Sioux CIty vs. Norfolk (Neb.) By Skinnerella

IRDD's Sioux City correspondent Skinnerella is back with another excellent scene report. She is also back on the track . Skinnerella is the author of this piece.

Sioux City--This morning I, like many of you, I'm sure, woke up covered in fresh bruises, stinking of stale sweat, wondering, "What the hell happened last night?" Well, I don't know what happened to you, but roller derby is what happened to the Sioux City Roller Dames and the Norfolk Bruizin' Betties! It was like one big, happy family, only with less drinking and crying. We mixed the teams and split into two squads: Team Kill vs. The Unicorns. Norfolk's team, being brand new and still fresh and crisp from the box, got the great experience of teaming up with some of the veteran members of the Dames.

It was a night of many firsts; for some of the girls, it was their first time on a track, or even their first time on skates since graduating from the pony princess pom-pom model, and others (ahem, yours truly among them) popped their jammer cherry. First time jammers, including Cream Ur Soda and Capitana Feisty for The Unicorns and Miss Ruthless and Lolly Rocket Pop for Team Kill, made epic (or at the very least, novel) showings against some of the most formidable ass-walls in the game. Watch out for these ladies; you WILL hear about them again.

As impressive as the fresh meat looked, you couldn't help but notice the perfectly aged steaks skating around the track (that's it for the meat metaphor, I swear). Mo Payne scored a baffling 24 points in the third jam of the game, putting Team Kill securely in the lead. The Unicorns kept their horns to the grindstone, keeping the game within reach, and went into halftime 20 points down.

In the second half, everyone was finally in a groove and that groove led directly to the penalty box. Unicorns made up some ground with Team Kill's jammers tethered to the box with rubber bands. Meanwhile, Crystal Carnage, Team Kill's ridiculously pregnant bench coach screamed so loud that her fetus almost stormed right out of her womb to ask her mommy to keep it down.

We all love to score, but derby isn't derby without some big ol' hits. Felony Convixen, blocking for Team Kill, cleaned Hana Filaxis' clock, her watch and her kitchen timer, too. Your very own Skinnerella got launched at the scoring table; I played it cool, like I just flew over to say hi to Derek in the middle of a jam, but Felony Convixen bought my plane ticket. Psych-a-della reminded everyone why they are called the Suicide Seats when she gracefully took out an entire row of chairs.

All in all, it was quite a bargain for a night of free roller derby. The final score was 121-154, Team Kill. But really, when you spend the evening knocking the crap out of your best friends, everybody wins.
